assignment 2: electronic artwork concept proposal

with 3 comments

In a comment further below, Hide has raised some important questions on the electronic-artwork-assignment: “Should we create a real divice of the artwork or only a model/mock-up (appearance of the divice)? If we create a mock-up, should we only explain verbaly “how it works” in the presentation?”

We will certainly talk about this assignment task in class again (week 10). Meanwhile, please note: You are asked to develop a concept proposal, including [a] a description of the work, [b] a fictive scenario (narrative) that describes how the work interacts with the world and/or people, as well as [c] a technical scheme and [d] at least one visual/sonic mock-up (made in illustrator, photoshop, sketchUp, MaxMSP, …).
That is to say that you will not actually have to produce this piece and that its underlying technology can be partly fictive, too. You will need to be able to *imagine* it (see or hear it inside your head) and to describe it to us in the form of sketches (visual and/or acoustic); also including a technical scheme that shows (possibly invented) technical details.

Last year, for instance, someone presented the “Ultimate Universal Remote Control” that would control all aspects of our environment. This proposal showed the functionality of the remote control together with an elaborate narrative of how it could be used (and not be used) by different classes of people. So the proposal included the design of a device and a kind of political economy of Universal Remote Control, if you will.

And this is the most important point of this assignment: Your installation/performance/game needs to develop a critical scenario that involves participants in a negotiation process and, ideally, can provoke shifting of viewpoints. It is not about developing or showcasing a specific technology but about the social scenario and the politics involved. Similarly to the story format of our essay assignment, you are welcome to interpret the format (“artwork”) very subjectively – I dare you to push (your) boundaries, to overstep them, and to propose something perhaps slightly crazy or even outrageous! best *P
